What does it mean?
Does this painting by Roy Lichtenstein, entitled : DrowningGirl, say more about the girl who is drowning or more about this 'Brad' person whomever he might represent?????
Hmmm...yeah you didn't get it...I meant inno if we are going to read into this painting...oh waeaver...people have such a good way of just taking the wind out my ideas!!!!
It depends on the point of view of the observer. If you are a person who values your pride higher than other things, you'll think that Brad must be a very horrible person for it would be very shameful to call him. But if you are a person who values other things higher than your pride you will think that this girl is very proud, for her pride stops her from getting help from someone else who might be able to help.
I think the "drowning woman" is just day dreaming because of the position of her head. she's not exactly in the position to be drowning, it looks more as if she is resting her head and.. day dreaming. she's probably in some sort of emotional pain, crying! maybe our friend Lichtenstein is conveying the stereotypical mindset of the modern day/ new generation of sppoilt young girls. a mindset focused on going out, partying, boy friends (most likely mr. brad in this case) than school? before i thought brad was her possible boy friend i thought brad was referring to brad pitt? just what i'm thinking!!
i think that the girlt would rather drown than have Brad save her because she doesn’t want him to save her, and become a hero since she might not like him, and doesnt want him to be loved by everyone for something he isn't. i also think that she might be trying to commit sucide because of what Brad did,so she doesn't want him to try to save her because she is trying to get away from him.
This is about how women wanted to stand on their own two feet. It was done around the same time as the femminist act was starting to come into play, when women started to tire over always being relient on man. Although confessed that Lichtenstein hadnt revolved all his work around this, this piece does convey the idea of this girl not wanting to rely on a man for help.
I think she is so terrified of being perceived as dependent and she has so much pride that she would never accept his help. I do think that its about feminism based on when this came out. I actually was taking a class last week and was staring at 5 ft tall print of this and had plenty of time to think about it.
I think that sometimes pride can really strain a relationship. obviously she shares a turbulent history with this brad person and even though she may still love him she is so hurt by something he said or did that she feels she would rather drown.
obviously brad an ex-boyfriend of some sort and they both have had an arguement, some how she has ended up in the water drowing, she doesnt want brad to save her, because its brad, she still wants to be rescued though, brad wants to help because he still love her and the picture conveys the key moment when you dont know how the tale will end. question - who is the person in the picture?
from reading recent posts, I think that this picture is actually of a girl in a day dream, or thinking of what might happen if something happened between her and brad (this is assuming this is her boyfriend), and maybe she doesn’t like him or is considering there relationship, her day dream is telling her would she rather have a bad ending, the worst dying, or a good ending with brad? i wonder what this could mean?
I think she is just trying to go as long as she can before swallowing her pride. She knows that she wouldn't actually let herself die- she is just being dramatic and trying to convince herself that she would. Brad is not necessarily a really horrible person - perhaps they have just had an argument and she has said she will never speak to him again? we don't know.
The water is a symbol of the overwhelming power he, Brad, has over her. The water is also repeated in her tear, showing the more realistic inflection he's had on her. It's a social comment on the utter realistic tie that people place in others, and i believe, lichtenstein is saying that it is a dangerous area. He's commenting that this strict love connection creates dependence, and no matter who brad is, will make you drown in the end. Beware believing.
I guess, the picture reflects the idea of feminism, which triggered last century. The independence of women, their unwillingness to be subservient to men any more, their will ane emotional strength-all that is symbolized in the picture. THe water means hard rat-racing modern life and tears- the fact that the girl is still feminine and weak by nature, but must not show that. This is one of the most convincing and unbelievable modern pictures I've ever seen in my life.I saw it in New York last summer in the MoMa museum. The painter was definitely genious.
Simple, just means she'd rather sink than call Brad for help...whoever he is. Does'nt matter. It doesn't represent anything, it is what is says it is

ReplyDeletebrad hurt her and now she doesn't wanna call him. at the same time, brad is glad she's gonna drown and die and will no longer bother him
ReplyDeleteIt means she would rather swallow gallons of water and die, than swallow her pride by asking for help from a man she despises and live.
ReplyDeletejust saw this painting in amigo's and i stared at it for like 10 min thinking about the same thing , and i still don't know
ReplyDeleteIt depends on the point of view of the observer.

so perhaps the picture says a lot more about you (the observer) than about the two characters in it

ReplyDeleteI believe that she is just emotionally hurt by this brad so much, that she'd rather die than have to see his ugly face again...
